El Susurro (The Breath)

ceramics, glazes, acrylics and in-glaze decals

El Susurro-lungs, butterfly, Torah shaped form represents the breath, the life one receives from your family. Hidden amongst the brachae are carved words in Hebrew-love and family. On the right is a decal of me and my father and on the left is a decal of his parents. It’s about my ancestry. My family are descended from Spanish Jews, who left Spain under pain of death and landed in northern New Mexico and were conversos. Like many Hispanic families in northern New Mexico, my ancestors converted from the Jewish faith to Catholicism in the late 16th century.
