Christmas Eve is a great time at Taos Pueblo. Some years the Matachine dancers are there. They are controversial because the represent the conquest of Native Peoples. But the dance is about the Moors from Spain and the blended religious traditions that include representations of Cortez and Malinche, his paramour shown as a little girl in white. The dances venerate the Holy Virgin and simultaneously acknowledge the religious conquest of Native Peoples of this region.
